Soul Food: Kids Give Me Hope

Do you guys know that wonderful, inspiring website Kids Give Me Hope? Check it out - it's really like soul food. People just submit their little stories about how kids give them hope. To inspire you, I picked out a few of my favorites from the site.

I was reading about a little kid whose mom had taught him that the key to life was happiness. In school one day, the teacher asked them to write down what they wanted to be when they grew up. He wrote "happy". They said he didn't understand the assignment. He said they didn't understand life. GMH (Gives Me Hope)

Freshman year, there was a crippled girl bound to a wheelchair. For 4 years, she did physical therapy and progressed to crutches. When we graduated a few weeks ago, she handed her crutches to an officer and walked across the entire stage. The applause from the seniors was deafening. She cried the whole way.

I recently rung up a young boy and his mother. When he saw me at the register, wearing a hijab, he grinned broadly at me. As they were walking away afterwards, he tugged on his mom's sleeve and said, "Did you see her, ma? She's gorgeous! I bet that's why she's all covered up!"

I was at work talking to a little girl who was in the line for the bouncy castle when she asked who I was texting. I told her my boyfriend. A dead serious look comes across her face and she says, "Boys are like spiders. Creepy and gross. At least you can squish a spider. Not a boy, though. I've tried."

I am a teacher for second graders. This past week we've been learning about facts and opinions. I said the statement "You are beautiful". A little girl raised her hand and said it was a fact. When I told her no she said, "Everyone is beautiful. No matter what, they are beautiful."

Admit it, this really is soul food.
